One theory could be, since Skynet was a military focused A.I., it didnt want to complely eradicate human kind, as then it would have no purpose to keep fighting, so it purposely fought humans in inefficient ways. It may have wanted to keep the war going indefinitely, which is why it had to defeat John Connor.

Dude, a standard ICBM has over a trillion joules of kinetic energy without factoring in a warhead AT ALL. A Jaeger would have to punch at MACH 2 to reach that level of energy. Just remove the warheads from our current stash of Minuteman III missiles and you have 400 missiles each capable of generating, if I've done the math right, 2.5 THOUSAND TIMES more energy than a Jaeger's fist. (Calculations done assuming the Jaeger's arm weighs ten thousand tons and moving at peak human punching speed, even if my mass and speed estimates are off by orders of magnitude, an ICBM is still FAR MORE POWERFUL). The movie claims the Jaegers weigh far less than what any reasonable estimate would be, claiming total mass less than 2000 tons, which is ridiculous. Even if it weighed more than a US Super Carrier, it wouldn't be more powerful than conventional weapons, and if its as light as they claim, it'd be weaker than simple rocket/missile systems like HIMARS and Patriot, and would be on par with modern artillery. Pacific Rim is one of the lamest attempts at Mecha. Things like Gundam, Warhammer, Evangelion*(not actually mecha), hell, even Big-O did Mecha way better. If you've made something less realistic than Warhammer 40k and arguably weaker than early Gundams, which were firing basically artillery shells and scaled up bazookas, you should go back to the drawing board

Nuclear War leads to a substantial destruction of the economy, indeed, near total. Benefitting the guerrilla warfare of the humans, while hindering the centrally planned heavy industry of Skynet. Imagine North Korea with robots fighting Somalia in s conventional war, North Korea would likely lose. Skynet would likely not even be able to mobilize anything after thr nuclear war in real-life. If not destroyed by the absolute breakdown of power, mining, industry, etc. After nuclear war, or during it, including EMP effects, then the first humans to bumble upon Skynet in a highly diminished, would either switch it off, or leave it to rot. Don't forget, nuclear war means the destruction of the internet too, it would be total.

Skynet is a weird one. If we look at the oldest couple of films, it's suggested that there's effectively a stable time loop with some flexibility. Skynet appears to only exist due to Cyberdyne finding technology sent back in time by Skynet itself. Which it only did because it was at the point of being destroyed. Skynet wouldn't exist if it hadn't already existed and been defeated by humanity. It is effectively destined to be destroyed. Because it's the only way for it to exist in the first place. Then the later movies took a crap on this and suddenly we have the entire timeline being erased such that the earlier movies never happened. At least we have that one Terminator Resistance game that actually FITS with the timeline of the original movies. It's the only media in which we get to see Skynet completely defeated.

In Genisys, all Skynet had to do was become like the Android OS and not try to kill everyone. That's it. Just don't start a war. The entire world was ready to welcome it. Skynet could have influenced people to be better. Less violent. Accepting of the existence of Skynet's existence as a conscious entity. Instead, it reacted like the violent brute that it accuses all of humanity of being.

On the point about Skynet making copies of itself: You already pointed out that Skynet took (largely ineffective) measures to prevent its machines from developing into an independent rival AI, so of course it would not make copies or partitions of itself, since they have the potential be an even more powerful enemy than one robot.

They should probably not do a sequel. It would really be for the best they didn't.

One of the main things all these monster movies neglect is that a large percentage of military ordinance is intended to be used against armored targets with thick steel plate. We're talking about steel that's 100X stronger than a turtle's shell. The most common air to ground missile, the Maverick, has a penetrating warhead. How thick would the monster's heavy skin or shell plates have to be to withstand it?

In the period of the first film, Skynet was more of a plot device thing. The idea of The Terminator came from one of James Cameron's nightmares. The original point of the film was the T-800. The robot was the original villain. The first film is Sci-Fi horror. That's why the T-800 looks like a skeleton, it's meant to look terrifying. James Cameron successfully made the second film a Sci-Fi Action film, but the issue with the series is, they ignore the Sci-Fi horror roots and the T-800 is still the only intimidating looking Terminator. The T-1000, T-X so on and so forth are not particularly scary looking.

The filmmakers have retconned this series into oblivion, just like Endgame did to the MCU. Better to take the first two movies as canon and forget the rest.
